Clive anxiously paced outside of the library in anticipation of its opening. Sharon had dominated his thoughts and his dreams the previous evening and he looked forward to seeing her again. He had tried to focus on his notes, but his mind kept drifting back to her warm smile and the way the light caught her hair.

He sat on a step, removed his notepad, and forced himself to concentrate. He had found evidence of an outside source involved in the Atlanta Ripper case. The police could not identify the mysterious party involved, but an editorial thanked the person who was able to finally put a stop to the gruesome murders. Clive grimaced when he had read that; they had no idea that the country would experience far worse atrocities twenty-something years later.

The detective tapped his pencil against his chin, thinking. What would he find in the Cleveland papers? Would they mention someone else’s involvement, or would they have chalked it up to pure luck that the murders stopped? Clive shook his head. No. Had that been true, Andy would not have said he knew of the woman.

Someone softly cleared her throat nearby and Clive glanced upward. The way the morning light shone against her skin made her look like an angel. “Good morning, Sharon.”

“Good morning, Detective. I had a feeling that you would be here early today.”

“Yes, I have a lot of research to do.”

Sharon smiled. “I hope you don’t mind that I went ahead and pulled the microfilm for you yesterday.”

“Not at all. That’s very helpful. Thank you.” Clive gathered his notes and stood up. “I hope that it didn’t take too long.”

“It didn’t take me any time at all with the parameters you gave me.” She motioned for him to follow her and she unlocked the front doors, disappearing momentarily as she turned on the lights. “I love it here,” she said quietly when she returned. “There is all of this knowledge here that is just begging to be shared. Adventures to take for the thrill seekers. Sad stories to be told for those who prefer tearjerkers. Then there are the romantic stories for those who crave it, whether they are just die-hard romantics themselves or missing it in their own lives.” Her eyes caught his as she spoke.

Clive blushed and looked away, feeling like a school boy. He gathered himself and replied, “I like being able to move around during the day. I don’t like being cooped up in a place for too long.”

Sharon’s smile faltered.

“I just meant that I don’t like to be behind a desk all day. I like to roam and being a detective lets me help keep the city safer.” Clive paused, realizing the sound of his words. “Not that what you’re doing is any less admirable. We all have our purposes,” he clarified, feeling clumsy as he spoke.

The librarian nodded. “Yes, what would life be without a purpose?” she asked, her voice trailing off. “Let me get you set up for the day, Detective.
